The
Importance Of E-mail |
|
E-mail is a powerful way to communicate with prospective
employers. Many company executives of today will
ignore regular mail but respond personally to e-mail.
Why send paper that clogs up the files and is often
ignored, when you can use a form of communication that
works better? |
|
In order to use e-mail you need to set yourself up to
have an e-mail account and then you have to actually
use it. E-mail doesn't have to cost money.
To set it up, many sites offer free e-mail accounts; the
most often used site would be
www.hotmail.com.
But having an e-mail account is only the beginning.
Executives getting e-mails usually respond quickly and
expect a response from you quickly. You need to
check your e-mail every two to three days, at a minimum.
Many free e-mail accounts expire if the account is
inactive for 30 days. |

You Don't Need A Computer |
|
Most households have a computer and it is connected to
the Net somehow. But you may need to get a job
before you can afford a computer. Don't think you
are left out in the cold if this is your situation.
Most libraries offer computer time, connected to the
Internet at very high speed. You can see what you
need and handle your e-mail from the library.

Get A Website - Make It Easy |
|
Posting your resume to your website may be a way that
more people will view it. A link to your posted
resume in your e-mail to prospective employers is so
easily clicked on, that it will be. |
|
If you do have an account with an Internet Service
Provider (like AOL, MSN, etc...) you may have free
server space that allows you to post a website. If
not, there are variety of Web "community" sites that
allow you to post to their servers free of charge.
Web authoring software is usually available through your
provider. |
|
We suggest, however that you are careful about posting
your address and phone number to the very public Web.
You can always post an e-mail link where the viewer has
to ask for them. |
|
On the subject of posted resumes, sites like
www.monster.com may
not have a lot of recording jobs, but it is free of
charge to people looking for a job. If I wanted a
job I would use these Net free services. |

A Concluding Note About Competition |
|
You are really in competition with other candidates for
any open job or internship position. If you are
hesitant to use the web in your search, remember that
your competitors will have one-up on you if you don't. |
